Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (or CBT) explores links between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. You and your therapist work together to identify and change unhelpful behaviours and thinking patterns. CBT is one of the main NHS recommended treatments for depression and anxiety. 'Third wave' CBT includes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness. These take a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing. They aim to help you increase psychological flexibility, experience things in a non-judgemental way and move closer to your personal values.
Counselling helps you to increase your self awareness and understanding so you can come to terms with negative feelings and develop inner resources to bring about change in your life. Your counsellor will view you as the expert on your life and will support you to find you own direction and solutions.
EMDR is a treatment for trauma, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some people experiencing trauma have difficulty processing the event/s as a normal memory. EMDR aims to help you re-process the memory making it less distressing and intrusive in your day-to-day life.
While EMDR is mainly recommended for trauma, some people find it helpful for other difficulties such as depression or anxiety..
Hello, and thank you for visiting my site.
I came into CBT/Counselling following a career teaching psychology. I had benefited from seeing a CBT Therapist/Counsellor myself so had personal experience of its value and decided to do the training.
One thing I love about the work is seeing people overcome difficulties with great resilience, humility and, surprisingly often, a sense of humour.
I have a keen interest in the natural world and am heartened by the re-emerging interest in 'green therapy'. I am a keen supporter of the creative arts because I recognise its important links to psychological wellbeing.
I have special interests in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and 'third wave' CBT treatments, including Mindfulness and ACT for long-term conditions.
